For distance, go with a baitcaster

I was just fine with spinning reels. A 43-inch flathead catfish changed all of that seven years ago. That Scioto River flathead in Ohio fought differently from the blue catfish I had been catching in Hoover Reservoir. I could not get enough of the submarines with spines.
Both species hammered home my need for stronger tackle. Heavier spinning gear seemed like the logical choice, but not this time.
