Mike Wherley, of Fayetteville, Pa., caught a giant flathead catfish May 13 below the Safe Harbor Dam in the Susquehanna River. Weighing 66 pounds, 6 ounces, it reportedly will be the new Pennsylvania record for the species.
Wherley took the flathead to Columbia Bait and Tackle where it was weighed on a state-certified scale and verified by Jeff Schmidt, a waterways conservation officer with the Fish & Boat Commission. After filling out the paperwork, Wherley reportedly put the fish back in the livewell of his boat and drove it to Columbia River Park to be released back into the Susquehanna.
