Traditional bass opener lacks excitement after removal of closed season in Pennsylvania

Until 20 years ago, opening day of bass season was a big deal at Cross Creek Lake, a Big Bass Program impoundment in Washington County, Pa.
Anglers would arrive the second Saturday in June eager to target trophy-size largemouths after a two-month moratorium during the spawn.
“Opening day of bass was almost like opening day of trout,” recalled Mike Milvet, owner of Cross Creek Bait & Tackle in Avella.
