The Lake Superior fishery got a much-needed boost when lake herring pulled off an epic spawning event in 2022, surveys are revealing.
“Based on the info we’re getting from the (U.S. Geological Survey), it’s a banner year-class,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor for the state DNR. “It’s rivaling or exceeding the 1984 year-class.”
Lake herring, also known as cisco or tullibee, are the primary native prey species in Lake Superior.
