Firearms industry braces for changes in New York as State Police take over background checks

As the New York State Police prepare to take on the roll of performing background checks for both firearms and ammunition purchases in New York, stakeholders at many levels are preparing for the change. In some cases, they are asking state leaders to hold off.
In an Aug. 23 letter sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul, four New York members of the U.S. Congress – Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Brandon Williams (NY-22) Nick Langworthy (NY-23) and Claudia Tenney (NY-24) – suggested the governor delay the roll-out of the background checks, which potentially could begin Sept. 13.
