Mussel species once found in Illinois among eight declared extinct

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently declared the tubercled-blossom pearly mussel extinct. The mussel was native to Illinois, as well as seven other states across the country.
It was one of eight mussels declared extinct by USFWS in October.
