Minnesota and Wisconsin bear harvest take big hit thanks to good food year

The 2023 bear hunting season closed on Oct. 15 and the Minnesota DNR saw a significant decrease in harvest totals, according DNR preliminary reports. Dan Stark, DNR large carnivore specialist, said the decline is mainly due to good natural food conditions that kept bears away from bait stations.
Stark compared the hunting season to 2018 where numbers dropped based on good food conditions. He added that after several years of high harvest, having a slower season can sometimes balance the population.
