Tiny plastic beads with a quirky name are at the center of a lawsuit that two environmental groups in Pennsylvania recently filed in federal court.
PennEnvironment and Three Rivers Waterkeeper are suing BVPV Styrenics LLC and its parent company Styropek USA, Inc., alleging that they are discharging wastewater and stormwater filled with polystyrene pellets, called nurdles, into the Ohio River and Raccoon Creek from their manufacturing facility in Monaca, Beaver County, in violation of the Clean Water Act.
