Top tips to get your birds as pheasant season winds down

As the big rooster rose from the prairie grass, I was navigating lumpy ground created by a herd of cattle that had grazed here during a wet year. Cattle make a mess of pheasant habitat for a hunter. But we have to hunt that ground, clumps and all.
As I raised my gun that day to take my shot, my foot slid off the hummock. I launched a terrible shot and watched as my ring-necked, long-tailed prize rooster sailed away. After that, I thought about why good footwork would have given me a much better chance of hitting that pheasant.
