Wisconsin’s Wolf River sturgeon spawn draws curious viewers

The Wisconsin DNR’s lead sturgeon biologist, Margaret Stadig, doesn’t mind getting up close and personal with a 100-pound lake sturgeon as she and other DNR sturgeon team members gathered April 15 at Bamboo Bend, a popular Wolf River sturgeon viewing spot on the east side of Shiocton, Wis.
Thousands of sturgeon make their annual spawning trip up the Wolf River from Lake Winnebago. Although most of them return to Winnebago or the upriver lakes after the spawn, others head upriver to the Shawano dam.
