University of Minnesota Forestry Center in state-tribal land transfer negotiations

Published: , in Outdoor News

A bill in the Minnesota Legislature would transfer parcels of state-owned land within the boundaries of the Cloquet Forestry Center to the University of Minnesota. Once that’s completed, the university is planning to transfer all the state- and university-owned land to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The bill and the university’s intent have generated debate among citizens who support transferring original Fond du Lac reservation land, while others are questioning what this transfer would mean to university students at the center and why the land is being transferred for free.
