Yellow Lake walleyes elusive during governor’s opener in Wisconsin

The 2024 Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener was celebrated May 3 in Siren and May 4 at Yellow Lake in Burnett County, putting the spotlight on Burnett County’s many natural resources. However, one of the state’s most popular game fish, the walleye, failed to make the big stage.
An opening morning steady rainfall kept some fishermen inside, while those who braved the elements found few willing walleyes. According to local DNR Fish Biologist Craig Roberts, the 2,283-acre Yellow Lake is the best walleye lake in Burnett County, and also offers a good muskie fishery.
