A big male black bear with a dressed weight of 409 pounds was struck and killed by a car on M-32 in Alpena County, Mich., on June 10 about five miles east of Hillman.
The bear’s live weight would have been about 470 pounds.
In the fall, that bear would have had an estimated weight of around 600 pounds. No one at the scene of the accident wanted the bear, so the state police officer who investigated claimed the carcass to salvage both the meat and hide.
