Norther Wisconsin’s deer herd: Forest and Florence counties share disparate habitats, hunter success

A proposal that seems to be gaining momentum in Wisconsin is a return to the old deer management units system, which was in place before county-based management was instituted after Dr. James Kroll’s 2012 Deer Trustee Report.
Proponents believe the old “numbered” unit system allowed deer to be better managed according to habitat, whereas the current county system is too broad. There are perhaps no greater examples of the reasoning to return to the previous unit system than Forest and Florence counties in northeastern Wisconsin.
