Hudson River researchers in New York boat rare Atlantic sturgeon

In June, biologists and volunteers working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program caught a female Atlantic sturgeon, estimated to weigh about 220 pounds, in the Hudson River near the Town of Hyde Park.
Fish of that size are not unusual, and the DEC has captured even larger sturgeon this year. However, the fact that the fish was a mature female made it a notable catch that grabbed national headlines.
