Mapleton school in Minnesota repurposes retention pond for fish, providing educational and recreational opportunity

When the Maple River School District began designing its new K-12 school building in Mapleton, Minn., middle school science teacher Collin Nienhaus seized the opportunity to create a “living classroom.”
Because stormwater retention ponds were necessary for the facility to store and filter stormwater runoff, Nienhaus requested the school district dig one of the retention ponds deep enough to support a fish population – and the district took the bait.
