Southern Illinois University tracking invasive nutria among beavers, muskrats, otters

Derek Whipkey is studying the distribution of beavers, muskrats, river otters, and mink across the bottom portion of Illinois. 
While he’s at it, the researcher at Southern Illinois University also is looking into reports of a fifth semiaquatic mammal species that is gradually making its way into the region – an unwanted new neighbor that wrecks habitats and spreads disease. Yup, the nutria.
