When water in the Youghiogheny Reservoir got low enough to expose a 206-year old bridge submerged underwater since 1944, curiosity seekers flocked to explore the Somerset- Fayette County, Pa., relic.
About 10,000 visitors showed up in recent weeks to investigate the Great Crossings Bridge – which was built in 1818 as part of the National Highway, and then flooded 125 years later for construction of the Yough Dam – prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restrict public access, effective Nov. 8.
