‘Remarkable’ comeback complete, Lake Superior lake trout will provide fish to stock Minnesota’s inland lakes

For the first time in history, the Minnesota DNR is planning to use lake trout from Lake Superior as broodstock to meet stocking quotas on inland lakes in northern Minnesota.
If disease testing checks out, the new stocking regimen will start in fall 2025.
“It’s a really great rehabilitation story, going from almost extirpation of lake trout from Lake Superior in the 1950s to now using it as a source for inland stocking throughout Minnesota,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota DNR.
