Star Watch: Get to know Sirius, our brightest star

Astronomers say that of the thousands of stars visible to us in the northern hemisphere, Sirius is the brightest of them all. Yet, I doubt that it is as familiar to most people as the star Polaris, which only ranks 50th in brightness but has the distinction of being located very near true north in our sky.
