Avian influenza naturally occurs in certain wildlife

Wisconsin is seeing a wide variety of mortality of wildlife species due to the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), but the risk of the virus to the general public is relatively low.
Jasmine Batten, wildlife health specialist for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told the Natural Resources Board (NRB) that the avian influenza routinely and naturally occurs among waterfowl and other wild aquatic birds worldwide.
