The odds of catching a state record smallmouth bass across the Northeast and Midwest have greatly improved the past couple of decades. These state records have been broken numerous times in recent years. There’s a handful of reasons for this possibility.
One is the fact that years ago, the round goby baitfish entered our Great Lakes waterways. The gobies that are loaded with protein help the normal-sized smallies put on an extra pound or more during their lifetime. The second reason for the increased number of records is probably technology.
