A red-necked grebe showed up in our Illinois neighborhood recently.
Being a bird nerd, I was intrigued. My life list is modest – only about 360 birds, about half of the species that can be seen in the United States. On the other hand, when word filtered through the birding grapevine, I knew the creature was not on my list.
