Study of Minnesota’s Leech Lake muskies: All about movement in year one, with mortality data to come
Growing up in the area and fishing Leech Lake, especially for muskies, it was a no-brainer for Baylor Short to tackle a Leech Lake muskie study coordinated by MN-Fish, the Minnesota DNR, and Bemidji State University.
“It’s nice to be working with the species I enjoy fishing for,” said Short, fisheries specialist for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and a BSU grad student leading the field work.
The study is well under way this summer, as Short has traversed the lake while dropping receivers and tracking tagged muskies, via boat, to better understand habitat use, how far the fish are moving, and to gauge mortality.
