We heard from several readers in western Pennsylvania who reported coming across dead deer in August. One blamed their deaths on EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease) and the other – an old farmer – said they died from bluetongue. I wondered if they are the same.
Turns out, EHD and bluetongue are caused by genetically related, but distinct, viruses transmitted to deer by biting midges, both causing similar symptoms like weakness, fever and swelling, often with blood-tinged mucus.
