Beating the heat, bugs for a Minnesota doe on the bow opener

By the time I found the big doe, it was well past dark. Stars were shining brightly and the only sound was the occasional bark of a farm dog in the distance.
Tracking the deer had taken longer than I’d expected, despite my strong suspicion that it was a good hit. That’s how it works sometimes. As hunters, it’s our responsibility to do our best to find and honor the animals that we kill.
