New York DEC hits cheese factory with $475,000 fine for polluting Ischua Creek

A major wastewater discharge from the Great Lakes Cheese plant in August that caused a widespread fish kill in Ischua Creek was seemingly the worst since the facility began operations in late 2024.
But it wasn’t the first. Records from the Environmental Protection Agency show the company self-reported numerous violations of its wastewater permit as early as December 2024, almost immediately after the Cattaraugus County facility began its cheese-making operations.
