Commentary: A look at New York’s three-county 500-foot crossbow set-back rule

A recent article and an editorial in the Sept. 19 New York Outdoor News edition regarding the new crossbow law pointed out the 500-foot setback for Suffolk and Westchester counties (the law also includes Nassau) reduces the possibility of crossbow hunting on private land compared to the prior crossbow rule of 250 feet.
It needs to be understood that the original version of the law, if passed, would have resulted in a 150-foot setback like the other bow categories. However, the 250-foot restriction remained in the filed bill.
