Sneaking quietly along the ridge in the inky-black stillness of predawn, a fresh coating of snow revealed where bears had clearly overturned leaves while rooting for acorns.
Multiple sets of tracks added confidence that we had chosen the right location for opening morning. We dropped in elevation to the next bench, half sliding on our backsides down the steep, laurel-choked slope.
