The last living passenger pigeon hatched in captivity in the Cincinnati Zoo. Her parents had been born in the wild and put in the zoo for noble reasons.
The thousands of passenger pigeons that formerly migrated over Cincinnati were no more. In fact, the species was on the road to extinction. The captive pigeons became the only way for anyone to see a live one. More importantly, it was hoped the offspring from captive, wild parents, would someday be able to reestablish wild flocks.
