Reflecting on half a century of Wisconsin deer hunting

Fifteen minutes after squeezing the trigger, I was dumbfounded. The shot at the buck was only a little more than 50 yards and my crosshairs had been squarely on its shoulder.
As it ran off the buck appeared to be injured, but so far I had not found blood nor hair where it had stood, or in the direction it had run. Could I have missed?
