One of the reasons early settlers came to Michigan was because of the fur trade.
Well before statehood, the fur trade was the dominant industry in Michigan and remained so for more than a 100 years. Detroit was known as a hub for furs centuries before it became known for automobiles. These days, the fur trade is a mere blip in Michigan’s economy, but trapping remains a significant form of outdoor recreation.
